Nami went to the vet today to get some progesterone testing done. Looks like she's just entering her fertile cycle, so we have a recheck on Tuesday to check in with her progesterone and start ovulation timing.
This will be Nami's second and final litter. Nami has the ability to throw red, sesame, or white pups depending on who she is paired to, and for this final litter I have narrowed down to 2 different potential sires among our US dogs...
"Riki" is a 2 year old male from Hakuzan Kennel's first litter. He is a nice, healthy Kishu with great structure and a nice temperament, owned by Gen at Sagami no Roushya - the kennel Nami was at prior to coming to me. Riki has the possibility, by parentage, to throw white, sesame, or red puppies. He has a nice, harsh coat with a good undercoat and I saw no evidence of allergies or skin irritation. His downside is that he will be a linebreeding on Nami (who is his grandmother on his sire's side.) The benefit to such a linebreeding is producing Kishu with nice type and predictable personalities. The downside is, as a preservation breeder, my goal is always to go for the most diverse pairing I can produce, to ensure robustness and genetic health. However, I think these pups would make fine, active companions and would still have a place in our population for preservation.

"Cuchulainn" is another choice for sire to this litter, and a half-brother to Riki whose pedigree does not include Nami or any of the dogs in her ancestry. His drawback is his age - Cuchulainn is not yet mature, at only 15 months, but is otherwise a great genetic and pedigree match for producing diverse offspring with Nami. He can throw white or red coated puppies, so a litter between him and Nami would produce mostly red, with a chance for red sesame or white. My major concern other than Cuchulainn's age is producing very intense puppies. Nami is an easy dog now, but these puppies are likely to be very high energy and driven to run and Do Things - which could be great for homes seeking active companions.
