Clíodhna [klee-na] (formerly Yuki) is a pet who was imported from Japan by her previous owners and came to me when the owners reached out for assistance due to behavior issues. Clíodhna will never be bred, but is here for purposes of posterity and documentation.
The reason her previous owners reached out was due to a history of aggression and impulsive behavior that they could not keep up with and could not safely manage. My background as a trainer who worked specifically with aggressive dogs meant that I could take her on and offer her a place in my home - but that is not something all owners can do. With strict management and an intensive behavior modification plan, she has shown some improvement and her behavior has stabilized. Unfortunately, Clíodhna's behavior makes her a difficult pet and she will live out the rest of her life here in my care. This behavior may not be uncommon as similar reports of challenging behavior have been seen in even US-bred Kishu (who have occasionally wound up in shelters or on internet forums and community websites like Craigslist seeking rehoming.) It is up to breeders to step up and help these dogs if we are to safeguard the breed in the USA.
If you have a Kishu Ken who is showing concerning behavior, please reach out. I am happy to help in any way I can and refer to trainers and behaviorists in your area if possible.
